"For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding." (Proverbs 2:6)
Chapter 2 is a single extended sentence in Hebrew: if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, calling out for insight and crying aloud for understanding, searching for it as for silver and seeking it as for hidden treasure - then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright; he is a shield to those whose way of life is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
The Catechism identifies the search for wisdom with the effort of prayer and study that opens the human heart to the divine gift: wisdom is given, not manufactured, but the giving requires the searching (CCC 2654).
Brothers and sisters, search for wisdom as for silver and seek it as for hidden treasure. The intensity of the search is proportional to the value of what is sought. No one searches for silver with casual attention. No one finds hidden treasure by accident. The wisdom that comes from God requires the searching that takes God seriously.
Lord God, you give wisdom from your mouth. We search for it as for hidden treasure. Open your mouth and let us hear. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
