"Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools." (Ecclesiastes 5:1)
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong. Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. A dream comes when there are many cares, and many words mark the speech of a fool. When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfil it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfil your vow. It is better not to make a vow than to make one and not fulfil it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin. Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.
The Catechism identifies the counsel to guard your steps at the house of God as the foundation of liturgical reverence: the worship of God requires the preparation of the heart that recognises who is being addressed (CCC 2628).
Brothers and sisters, God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. The prayer that is mostly silence, mostly listening, mostly attentive presence before the One who is greater than all our words - this is the prayer that Ecclesiastes commends. Come to the house of God to listen rather than to speak. Then let what you hear shape what you say.
Lord God, you are in heaven and we are on earth. We guard our steps as we approach you. Let our words be few and our listening deep. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
