“They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child.” (Zechariah 12:10)
A prophecy: the word of the LORD concerning Israel. I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. On that day I will set out to destroy all the nations that attack Jerusalem. And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
John quotes Zechariah 12:10 at the crucifixion: when one of the soldiers pierced Jesus's side with a spear, the blood and water flowed, and John says this fulfilled the scripture they will look on the one they have pierced (John 19:37). The Catechism identifies this passage as one of the most directly Messianic prophecies in the Old Testament (CCC 1432).
Brothers and sisters, they will look on me, the one they have pierced. The mourning that follows the looking is the mourning of recognition: this is the one. The sorrow of Good Friday is the sorrow of those who see what the piercing cost. Look. Mourn as for an only child. Let the grief of recognition be the beginning of the spirit of grace and supplication that Zechariah promises.
Lord God, pour out on us the spirit of grace and supplication. Let us look on the one who was pierced and mourn with the mourning that leads to life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
