"The righteous stand with great confidence in the presence of those who have afflicted them." (Wisdom 5:1)
Then the righteous will stand with great confidence in the presence of those who have afflicted them and those who make light of their labours. When the unrighteous see them, they will be shaken with dreadful fear, and they will be amazed at the unexpected salvation of the righteous. They will speak to one another in repentance, and in anguish of spirit they will groan. What has our arrogance profited us? We thought their lives were madness and their deaths without honour, but they are numbered among the children of God. So it was we who strayed from the way of truth. The righteous live forever and their reward is with the Lord; their recompense is in the care of the Most High. They will receive a glorious crown and a beautiful diadem from the hand of the Lord.
The Catechism identifies Wisdom 5 as the most vivid Old Testament description of the reversal at the last judgment: the righteous vindicated before those who despised them (CCC 1038).
Brothers and sisters, the righteous will stand with great confidence before those who afflicted them. The reversal that justice requires and time delays will happen. If you have been mocked for your faith, dismissed for your integrity, or written off as a fool for your obedience - stand. The confidence that waits for the final day is the most unshakeable confidence available. It does not depend on present vindication.
Lord God, the righteous will stand with great confidence at the last. Let us stand in patient confidence now, trusting the reversal that is coming. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
