“The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.” (Nahum 2:2)
An attacker advances against Nineveh. Guard the fortress, watch the road, brace yourselves, marshal all your strength! The shield of his soldiers is red; the warriors are clad in scarlet. The metal on the chariots flashes on the day they are made ready. The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning. Nineveh is like a pool whose water is draining away. Stop! Stop! But no one turns back. Plunder the silver! Plunder the gold! The supply is endless, the wealth from all its treasures! She is pillaged, plundered, stripped! The LORD will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.
The Catechism identifies the fall of Nineveh as the historical vindication of the prophetic word: what Nahum announced was fulfilled with the precision that authenticates the divine origin of prophecy (CCC 215).
Brothers and sisters, the LORD will restore the splendour of Jacob. In the middle of the oracle about Nineveh's fall, God pauses to say: this is for Jacob's sake. The destruction of the oppressor is the liberation of the oppressed. Every time a Nineveh falls, a Jacob is restored. Trust that the God who judges the powerful does so for the sake of the crushed. The restoration is coming.
Lord God, restore the splendour of your people as you bring down every Nineveh that oppresses them. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
