"Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high." (Job 16:19)
Job responds: miserable comforters are you all. Will your long-winded speeches never end? If you were in my place I could make speeches against you too. Surely, God, you have worn me out. He has torn me in his anger and gnawed me; he has made me his target. His archers surround me. Yet: even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of a man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend. He anticipates death: only a few years will pass before I take the path of no return.
Job's declaration of a heavenly witness and advocate is one of the most theologically forward-reaching passages in the Old Testament. The Catechism identifies this as a dim anticipation of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate (Paraclete) who pleads for believers before God, and ultimately of Christ the great Intercessor (CCC 692).
Brothers and sisters, even now my witness is in heaven. When every earthly comforter has failed and your only witnesses are those misinterpreting your suffering, there is still the heavenly witness. The one who knows the truth of your situation speaks for you before the Father. The case is not unrepresented.
Lord God, even now our witness is in heaven. Our Advocate pleads for us when no earthly voice defends us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
