“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
Jeremiah ministered in Jerusalem from approximately 627 to 587 BC, from the reign of Josiah through the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem. He is the most personally exposed of all the prophets: his confessions, laments, and arguments with God are woven throughout the book, giving us the most intimate portrait of prophetic experience in the Old Testament. He is called the weeping prophet, the prophet who loved the people he was sent to condemn.
The call comes with one of the most astonishing declarations in Scripture: before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah protests: I do not know how to speak; I am too young. God answers: do not say I am too young. You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you. He touches Jeremiah's mouth: I have put my words in your mouth. I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.
The Catechism identifies Jeremiah's call as one of the foundational texts for understanding vocation as divine election that precedes human existence (CCC 2012).
Brothers and sisters, before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Your identity before God is not constructed by your choices or achievements; it precedes them. You were known before you were formed. The calling on your life is older than your life. Do not let youth, inadequacy, or inexperience be your excuse. God answers the I am too young with: I am with you.
Lord God, you knew us before you formed us and set us apart before we were born. Give us the courage of Jeremiah to go where you send us and say what you command. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
