“You said, 'I am forever, the eternal queen!' But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen.” (Isaiah 47:7)
Come down and sit in the dust, Virgin Daughter Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne. You will no longer be called tender or delicate. Take millstones and grind flour. Our Redeemer, the LORD Almighty is his name, the Holy One of Israel. You said, 'I am forever, the eternal queen!' But you did not consider these things or reflect on what might happen. Now then, listen, you lover of pleasure, lounging in your security and saying to yourself: I am, and there is none besides me. You have trusted in your wickedness and have said: no one sees me.
The Catechism identifies Babylon's declaration I am forever as the satanic parody of the divine name I AM: the creature claiming the eternity of the Creator (CCC 2110).
Brothers and sisters, I am forever, the eternal queen, said Babylon. I am, and there is none besides me. The language of God stolen by the creature that believes it has achieved divine permanence. Every empire that says I am forever discovers the same thing Babylon discovers: you did not consider what might happen. Consider it now.
Lord God, you alone are I AM. Every creature that claims your eternity will be brought down. Keep us humble. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
