"The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered." (Genesis 39:2)
Joseph is taken to Egypt and sold to Potiphar, an official of Pharaoh. The LORD was with Joseph so that he prospered. Potiphar sees that the LORD is with him and gives him success in everything he does. Joseph is put in charge of Potiphar's household and everything he owns. The LORD blesses the Egyptian's household for Joseph's sake. Everything Potiphar has is in Joseph's care. Joseph is well-built and handsome. Potiphar's wife takes notice and says: come to bed with me. Joseph refuses: how could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God? She asks him day after day; he refuses.
One day Joseph goes into the house when none of the other servants is there. She grabs his cloak and repeats her demand. He leaves his cloak in her hand and runs out. She accuses him to the servants and to Potiphar: the Hebrew slave you brought us came to make sport of me and when I screamed he ran off. Potiphar burns with anger and puts Joseph in prison. But the LORD was with him, showed him kindness, and granted him favour in the eyes of the prison warden. The warden puts Joseph in charge of all those in the prison and gives him success in whatever he does. The refrain repeats: the LORD was with Joseph.
Brothers and sisters, the LORD was with Joseph in Potiphar's house, in the false accusation, and in the prison. Divine presence does not guarantee the absence of unjust suffering. Joseph did exactly the right thing and ended up in prison for it. The righteousness that flees sin does not always receive an immediate reward in this age. But the LORD was with him, and the prison becomes the platform for the next chapter of the story. Trust the presence even when the circumstances punish the faithfulness.
Lord God, you were with Joseph in the pit, in Potiphar's house, and in the prison, and in every place you made him prosper. Be with us when faithfulness leads to unjust suffering. Do not let the prison be the end of the story. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
