“Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets.” (Amos 3:7)
Hear this word the LORD has spoken against you, Israel, against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt: you only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins. Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so? Does a lion roar in the thicket when it has no prey? Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground when no bait is there? Does a trap spring up from the ground if it has not caught anything? Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. The lion has roared - who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken - who can but prophesy?
The Catechism identifies the prophetic disclosure of divine plans as the expression of God's respect for human freedom: he warns before he acts, giving opportunity for response (CCC 702).
Brothers and sisters, you only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins. Election is not exemption; it is heightened accountability. The family chosen above all other families is held to a higher standard, not a lower one. Privilege carries weight. The chosen people who misread their election as protection from consequence have misread the covenant.
Lord God, let us receive our election as greater accountability, not exemption from it. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
