"His heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah." (2 Chronicles 17:6)
Jehoshaphat son of Asa becomes king and strengthens himself against Israel. He follows the ways of his father David: his heart was devoted to the ways of the LORD; furthermore, he removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah. In his third year he sends officials, Levites, and priests throughout Judah with the Book of the Law to teach the people. They teach throughout all the towns of Judah. The fear of the LORD falls on the surrounding kingdoms and the Philistines bring gifts and the Arabs bring 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats. Jehoshaphat becomes more powerful. His military establishment is detailed: five generals with armies totalling over a million men.
The Catechism identifies the sending out of teachers with the Book of the Law as the model of all catechetical mission: the covenant is maintained not only by the Temple cult but by the active formation of the people in its content and demands (CCC 2688).
Brothers and sisters, Jehoshaphat sent officials to teach the Book of the Law in every town. Formation precedes faithfulness. The people who do not know the covenant cannot keep it. The investment in teaching is the investment in the future of the community's relationship with God. Send the teachers.
Lord God, give your Church leaders who send teachers with the Book of the Law into every town, who invest in formation before they count on faithfulness. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
