"For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law." (2 Chronicles 15:3)
The Spirit of God comes on Azariah son of Oded and he goes out to meet Asa: listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. But in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them. Be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. Asa removes the detestable idols from Judah and Benjamin and from the towns he had captured in the hills of Ephraim. He repairs the altar of the LORD in front of the Temple portico. He renews the covenant to seek the LORD with all their heart and soul. Anyone who does not seek the LORD is to be put to death. They enter into a covenant with great enthusiasm. The LORD gives them rest.
The Catechism identifies the covenant renewal under Asa as the pattern of every revival: the removal of what is false, the repair of the altar, the binding of the community to seek God with all their heart (CCC 2580).
Brothers and sisters, for a long time without the true God, without a priest to teach, without the law. This is the description of spiritual drought. It ends when the people turn to God in their distress and seek him. He was found by them. The seeking ends in finding. Turn, seek, find.
Lord God, do not let your people be long without you, without a teacher, without your law. Where there is drought, send Azariah to call us back. And be found when we turn to seek you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
