“Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD.” (Zechariah 6:12)
Zechariah sees four chariots with different coloured horses coming from between two mountains of bronze. The angel explains: these are the four spirits of heaven going out from standing in the presence of the LORD of the whole world. Then the LORD instructs Zechariah to take silver and gold and make a crown and set it on the head of Joshua the high priest. Here is the man whose name is the Branch, and he will branch out from his place and build the temple of the LORD. It is he who will build the temple of the LORD, and he will be clothed with majesty and will sit and rule on his throne. And he will be a priest on his throne. And there will be harmony between the two.
The Catechism identifies the Branch who is both priest and king on his throne as the Messianic figure fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who unites the priestly and royal offices (CCC 436).
Brothers and sisters, there will be harmony between the two: the priest and the king united in one person. In Israel the functions were separate; in Christ they are one. The priest who offers sacrifice and the king who governs are the same person on the same throne. The harmony that the two offices could never achieve in Israel is achieved perfectly in Christ. He is priest and king. One throne. Perfect harmony.
Lord Jesus, Branch who builds the temple, priest and king on one throne, rule and intercede for us in perfect harmony. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
