"I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord." (Tobit 12:15)
Tobit and Tobias try to pay Raphael half of everything they have brought back. He stops them and reveals the truth: I will tell you the whole truth, concealing nothing. Prayer with fasting and almsgiving and righteousness is better than wealth with wickedness; it is better to give alms than to hoard gold. Almsgiving delivers from death; it purges away every sin. I was sent to you to put you to the test. And now God sent me to heal your wife Sarah and your father-in-law Raguel. When you buried the dead, were performing acts of mercy, I was bringing the memory of your prayer before the holy One. I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand ready and enter before the glory of the Lord. They are terrified. He reassures them: do not be afraid. He is taken up from their sight. They write down all his works.
The Catechism identifies Raphael's self-revelation as one of the clearest Old Testament teachings on the reality and ministry of the angels (CCC 332).
Brothers and sisters, Raphael had been carrying Tobit's prayer and almsgiving before God the whole time. When you fast and give alms and pray and nothing seems to happen: an angel may be carrying your faithful acts before the throne right now. The prayer is not unanswered; it is being presented. The almsgiving is remembered before the Holy One.
Lord God, receive the prayers and alms and fasting of your people through your holy angels who stand before your glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
