"Then Raguel urged Tobias to stay, saying, 'I will send word to your father Tobit.'" (Tobit 10:7)
Back in Nineveh, Tobit counts the days and becomes anxious: why has my son been delayed? Is Gabael dead? Anna sits watching the road daily and says: my son has perished. She refuses her husband's attempts to console her: be quiet, do not try to deceive me; my child has perished. She weeps for her son every day. In Ecbatana, Tobias wants to leave; he is worried about his parents. Then Raguel urged Tobias to stay, saying, 'I will send word to your father Tobit.' But Tobias presses to leave and Raguel agrees, sending Sarah with gifts, servants, and animals. Raguel blesses them: go with good health, my children; may the Lord of heaven prosper you. He blesses Sarah separately: go with your parents-in-law honoured; may I hear good news of you as long as I live.
The Catechism identifies Anna's vigil as a figure of all maternal anxiety: the love that cannot rest until the child is home (CCC 2214).
Brothers and sisters, Anna sat watching the road every day. She would not be consoled; she kept her vigil. The love that watches the road for the returning child is not irrational; it is the shape of the love that formed the child. God sees every Anna watching every road for every absent child. He will bring them home.
Lord God, you see every parent watching the road for an absent child. Bring them home. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
