"As for the girl, no demon will have power over her any more, because she has feared God from childhood." (Tobit 6:16)
Raphael tells Tobias about the medicinal properties of the fish: the gall cures white films on the eyes; the heart and liver, when burned, produce smoke that drives away any demon or evil spirit and keeps it away forever. As they approach Ecbatana, Raphael tells Tobias about Sarah, the beautiful daughter of Raguel, who has a right of inheritance as the closest male kinsman. When Tobias hears about the seven dead husbands he is afraid. Raphael reassures him: as for the girl, no demon will have power over her any more, because she has feared God from childhood. The demon loves her but cannot have her because she fears God and will sleep with her husband in truth and in prayer. Tobias falls in love with the idea of marrying Sarah.
The Catechism identifies the instruction to pray on the wedding night and to enter marriage in the fear of God as the theological centre of Tobit's understanding of marriage: the covenant of marriage is protected by prayer (CCC 1611).
Brothers and sisters, no demon will have power over her any more, because she has feared God from childhood. The fear of God is the protection that makes the covenant relationship safe. What the demon could exploit in a marriage entered carelessly cannot reach the marriage entered in prayer. Fear God. Pray before the wedding night. The evil cannot hold where God has been welcomed.
Lord God, protect every marriage entered in your fear. Let no demon have power over those who approach the covenant of marriage with prayer and reverence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
