"Give alms from your possessions to all who live uprightly, and do not let your eye begrudge the gift when you make it." (Tobit 4:7)
Thinking he will die, Tobit summons Tobias and gives him detailed instructions for life: honour your mother, bury her beside him when she dies, walk in truth. Then the wisdom on almsgiving: Give alms from your possessions to all who live uprightly, and do not let your eye begrudge the gift when you make it. Do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor, and the face of God will not be turned away from you. Give in proportion to what you have; almsgiving delivers from death and keeps you from entering the darkness; almsgiving is a fine offering to all who practise it. Seek counsel from every wise man. Bless the Lord God on every occasion. Do not be proud in your wisdom. Do not love immorality. Pay the hired worker immediately. And: seek a wife from among your kindred; do not marry a foreign woman.
The Catechism identifies Tobit's instructions as one of the richest Old Testament summaries of the moral and spiritual life, integrating family piety, almsgiving, prayer, and covenant fidelity (CCC 2447).
Brothers and sisters, do not turn your face away from anyone who is poor, and the face of God will not be turned away from you. The connection is direct: the face you show to the poor is the face God shows to you. The averted face reproduces itself upward. Give with a turned face. Receive a turned face from God.
Lord God, give us Tobit's open hand and turned face toward the poor. And let your face be turned toward us in the same proportion. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
