"He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you wish." (Sirach 15:16)
The one who fears the Lord will do this; and the one who holds to the law will obtain wisdom. Do not say: it was the Lord's doing that I fell away, for he does not do what he hates. Do not say: it was he who led me astray, for he has no need of the sinful. The Lord hates all abominations. It was he who created humankind in the beginning, and he left them in the power of their own free choice. He has placed before you fire and water; stretch out your hand for whichever you wish. Before each person are life and death, and whichever one chooses will be given.
The Catechism identifies Sirach 15:14-17 as one of the foundational Old Testament texts for the theology of human free will: God is not the author of sin; he created human beings in the power of their own free choice (CCC 1730).
Brothers and sisters, fire and water are both before you. Life and death, blessing and curse, are placed before you. God does not choose for you. This is the gift of freedom and its weight. Choose life - not because it is the only option, but because it is the option that leads to the fullness God prepared for you.
Lord God, you have placed before us fire and water, life and death. We choose life. We choose you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
