Catholic Commentary on Psalm 121

"My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth." (Psalm 121:2)

The Pilgrim's Guard

Psalm 121 is perhaps the most beloved of the Songs of Ascents and one of the most comforting psalms in the entire Psalter. The pilgrim lifts their eyes to the hills and asks: from where does my help come? The answer is immediate and decisive: My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. Not from the hills themselves, not from any human source, not from any power within creation. From the Maker of all of it.

What follows is a sustained meditation on the protective watchfulness of God, using the word "watch" six times in six verses. He will not let your foot slip; he who watches over you will not slumber. The LORD watches over you; the LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm; he will watch over your life. He will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. The Catechism calls divine providence the wisdom by which God guides all creation toward its proper end, watching over every creature with a care that extends to the smallest detail (CCC 321). The pilgrim who has understood this psalm travels with a different quality of attention: watched, shielded, kept.

Living the Word

Brothers and sisters, the LORD who watches over you does not sleep. Every hour of your night, every step of your journey, every coming and going of your life: he is watching. Not watching to judge but watching to guard. Let that change how you travel through this day.

Prayer

Lord God, Maker of heaven and earth, my help comes from you. Watch over my going out and my coming in, from this time forth and forevermore. Let my foot not slip and your shade be over me in every exposure. I trust my life to the one who does not sleep. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

121
I Lift Up My Eyes to the Hills
A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not allow your foot to slip;
your Protector will not slumber.
Behold, the Protector of Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD is your keeper;
the LORD is the shade on your right hand.
The sun will not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The LORD will guard you from all evil;
He will preserve your soul.
The LORD will watch over your coming and going,
both now and forevermore.
