"Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you." (Psalm 61:1-2)
Psalm 61 opens with one of the most geographically vast images of prayer in the Psalter: Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the ends of the earth I call to you, I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I. David is in exile, far from Jerusalem, from the Temple, from the presence of God as he experienced it in the place of worship. He prays from the ends of the earth, from the most distant point, and he expects God to hear him there.
This is the Catholic teaching on prayer in its most elemental form: there is no place on earth too far from God for the prayer to reach him. The God who made the ends of the earth hears from the ends of the earth. Distance from the Temple does not mean distance from the divine presence. The Catechism teaches that Christian prayer is always possible because the indwelling Spirit makes the soul a temple (CCC 2720). You carry the sacred space with you. Pray from wherever you are.
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. This is a prayer for a perspective that exceeds the one David currently has. From the ends of the earth, with his heart growing faint, he cannot see far enough. He needs the rock that is higher than himself: the vantage point of God, the elevation that shows the whole landscape. The rock that is higher than I am is Christ, in whom all things are recapitulated and from whom the full vista of salvation history can be seen. He is also the cornerstone that the builders rejected, the rock on which the Church is built.
The psalm then prays for the king's long life, that he may dwell forever before God. The Church reads this as a prayer for Christ the eternal king whose reign knows no end. The vows made will be fulfilled, the praises will ascend, the steadfast love and faithfulness of God will protect the king. And from the ends of the earth, from the farthest exile, the song of praise rises: so I will ever sing in praise of your name.
Brothers and sisters, wherever you find yourself today, even at the ends of the earth in terms of how far you feel from God's presence, pray from there. God hears from the ends of the earth. Your distance is not an obstacle to his hearing. Call from where you are. He will lead you to the rock that is higher than you.
Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From wherever I am today, from whatever ends of the earth I find myself in, I call to you. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Set me in your shelter. Let me take refuge in the shadow of your wings. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
