Catholic Commentary on Psalm 59

"But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble." (Psalm 59:16)

Delivered from My Enemies

Psalm 59 is connected in its superscription to the night when Saul sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him (1 Samuel 19). The enemies are at the gates: they prowl around the city, snarling like dogs, ready to strike. David's prayer is urgent and specific: Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me. Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood. There is nothing vague about this prayer. The danger is real and the petition is concrete.

But the theological confidence that runs through the psalm transforms the urgency into trust rather than panic. God has been David's strength before. His steadfast love is David's shield. The enemies are real but they are not the ultimate reality. You, Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the One who lifts my head high. Even while surrounded, the head is lifted.

Morning Song

But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. The morning song is the resolution of the night's fear. The person who has survived the night in which the enemies prowled greets the morning with song. Not because the threat has passed, but because God is still the fortress and the refuge. The morning song is the liturgical practice that the Church inherited from the Psalter: Lauds, the Office of morning prayer, is the continuation of this morning singing.

Living the Word

Brothers and sisters, the practice of beginning the day with prayer and praise is ancient, Scriptural, and transformative. In the morning I will sing of your love. Before the day begins, before the enemies are known to be at the gates or not: sing. It does not matter how you feel. The song declares the reality that your feelings may not yet be feeling: you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.

Prayer

Lord God, be my fortress against those who attack me. You are my strength; I watch for you. In the morning I will sing of your love. You are my fortress and my refuge. Let your steadfast love be my shield all day long. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Deliver Me from My Enemies
(1 Samuel 19:1–24)

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
protect me from those who rise against me.
Deliver me from workers of iniquity,
and save me from men of bloodshed.
See how they lie in wait for me.
Fierce men conspire against me
for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD.
For no fault of my own,
they move swiftly to attack me.
Arise to help me, and take notice.
O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel,
rouse Yourself to punish all the nations;
show no mercy to the wicked traitors.

They return in the evening, snarling like dogs
and prowling around the city.
See what they spew from their mouths—
sharp words from their lips:
“For who can hear us?”
But You, O LORD, laugh at them;
You scoff at all the nations.

I will keep watch for You, O my strength,
because You, O God, are my fortress.
10 My God of loving devotion will come to meet me;
God will let me stare down my foes.

11 Do not kill them,
or my people will forget.
Scatter them by Your power,
and bring them down,
O Lord, our shield.
12 By the sins of their mouths
and the words of their lips,
let them be trapped in their pride,
in the curses and lies they utter.
13 Consume them in wrath;
consume them till they are no more,
so it may be known to the ends of the earth
that God rules over Jacob.

14 They return in the evening,
snarling like dogs
and prowling around the city.
15 They scavenge for food,
and growl if they are not satisfied.

16 But I will sing of Your strength
and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning.
For You are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
17 To You, O my strength, I sing praises,
for You, O God, are my fortress,
my God of loving devotion.
