"I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, Lord." (Psalm 26:6)
Psalm 26 is the prayer of someone who invites God's examination with confidence, not because they are sinless but because in a specific matter they stand with integrity before the Lord. Vindicate me, Lord, for I have led a blameless life; I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, Lord, and try me, examine my heart and my mind. This is the prayer of a person who has examined their own conscience and found it clear on the charge being brought against them. They are not claiming general sinlessness. They are claiming integrity in a specific dispute.
The middle of the psalm is a portrait of the wicked that David refuses to join: those who are hypocritical, evildoers, the wicked. He has not sat with them or walked with them. He has loved the house of the Lord, the place of God's glory. I wash my hands in innocence, and go about your altar, Lord, proclaiming aloud your praise and telling of all your wonderful deeds. The gesture of washing hands before the altar is the ritual expression of an inner state: clean hands signify a clean conscience, a right relationship with God and neighbour.
The psalm then turns to a petition of trust: Do not take away my soul along with sinners, my life with those who are bloodthirsty, in whose hands are wicked schemes, whose right hands are full of bribes. David is not asking to be exempt from judgment. He is asking to be judged on his actual conduct, not lumped together with the wicked as though they were the same. This is the prayer of the person who has tried to live with integrity and asks that the integrity be acknowledged.
Brothers and sisters, Psalm 26 invites the practice of the examination of conscience, not as a morbid dwelling on failure but as the honest assessment of our integrity before God in the specific areas of our current life. Where do I stand before God today? Not in general terms, but in the specific relationships, decisions, and temptations of this week. Invite his examination. It is safer than avoiding it.
Lord, test me and try me. Examine my heart and my mind. Where I have walked with integrity, vindicate me. Where I have not, have mercy on me and restore me. I love the house where you live, the place where your glory dwells. Let me stand on level ground in the great assembly and praise you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
