"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." (Proverbs 15:1)
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. Better a small serving of vegetables with love than a fattened calf with hatred. The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous. The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, for the ears of the wise seek it out.
The Catechism identifies gentleness as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit and the virtue that distinguishes the wise response from the reactive one: the gentle answer that turns away wrath requires the mastery of the self that only the Spirit produces (CCC 1832).
Brothers and sisters, a gentle answer turns away wrath. You cannot control what is said to you. You can control what you say back. The moment between provocation and response is the moment where wisdom or folly is chosen. The gentle answer in that moment is not weakness - it is the most powerful move available, because it defuses rather than escalates.
Lord God, give us the gentle answer in every moment of provocation. Let our tongues be trees of life and not instruments of crushed spirits. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
