Catholic Commentary on Proverbs 11

"The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed." (Proverbs 11:25)

Honesty and Generosity

The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favour with him. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity. Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death. A kindhearted woman gains honour, but ruthless men gain only wealth. A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. People curse the one who hoards grain, but they pray God's blessing on the one who is willing to sell. Whoever trusts in their riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf.

The Catechism identifies the economy of generosity described in Proverbs as the pattern of the Kingdom: the gift that is given away returns to the giver in greater measure than what was sent out (CCC 2449).

Living the Word

Brothers and sisters, those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Generosity is not a sacrifice of one's resources but the circulation of them. The one who holds back hoards withering grain. The one who gives away refreshes others and is refreshed themselves. Open the hand. The refreshment comes back.

Prayer

Lord God, make us generous and give us the faith that those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dishonest Scales
(Deuteronomy 25:13-16; Ezekiel 45:10-12)
Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD,
but an accurate weight is His delight.

When pride comes, disgrace follows,
but with humility comes wisdom.

The integrity of the upright guides them,
but the perversity of the faithless destroys them.

Riches are worthless in the day of wrath,
but righteousness brings deliverance from death.

The righteousness of the blameless directs their path,

but the pursuit of evil brings death.

20 The perverse in heart are an abomination to the LORD,
but the blameless in their walk are His delight.

21 Be assured that the wicked will not go unpunished,
but the offspring of the righteous will escape.

22 Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout
is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion.

but the hope of the wicked brings wrath.

24 One gives freely, yet gains even more;
another withholds what is right, only to become poor.

and he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.

but evil will come to him who seeks it.

how much more the ungodly and the sinner!* 11:31 LXX If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner? Cited in 1 Peter 4:18
