"The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard, with the banners of their family clans." (Numbers 2:2)
God gives Moses and Aaron the order of encampment. The tribes are arranged in four groups around the tabernacle, three on each side, facing it from east, south, west, and north. Judah leads the eastern camp. Reuben leads the southern camp. Ephraim leads the western camp. Dan leads the northern camp. The Levites surround the tabernacle at the centre. When the camp moves, the order of march mirrors the order of encampment. Everything is arranged around the divine presence at the centre.
The arrangement is the visible declaration of Israel's theology: God at the centre, everything else in relation to him, every tribe at its appointed distance, every person under their standard, belonging to their family and clan. The Catechism identifies the ordered life of the covenant community as a reflection of the divine order: the harmony that God intends for creation is first visible in the organised life of his worshipping people (CCC 1878). The Church, organised around the Eucharist in the centre, with every member in their baptismal place, is the continuation of this arrangement. The Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard, with the banners of their family clans.
Brothers and sisters, every tribe camps under its own standard, in its own place, around the tabernacle at the centre. You have a place in the ordered community of God's people. Not every place is the same, not every standard is the same, but every person has their appointed position around the presence of God. Find your place and occupy it faithfully.
Lord God, you ordered the camp of Israel around the tent of meeting at its centre. Order our lives and our communities around your presence. Give each of us our appointed place and our own standard, and let everything we do be oriented toward you at the centre. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
