Catholic Commentary on Nehemiah 7

"I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do." (Nehemiah 7:2)

Securing the City and the List of Exiles

The wall is finished. Nehemiah appoints his brother Hanani and the citadel commander Hananiah as responsible for Jerusalem: I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do. The city is large but has few people; the houses have not been rebuilt. Nehemiah finds the genealogical record of those who came up first with Zerubbabel. He lists them: the same list as Ezra 2, with minor variations. He notes those who could not prove their genealogy. The list serves to re-establish the identity of the covenant community on the basis of covenant lineage and covenant fidelity.

The Catechism draws from Nehemiah's appointment of Hananiah the criterion for leadership: integrity and the fear of God are the primary qualifications for governing the city of God (CCC 1900).

Living the Word

Brothers and sisters, Hananiah got the job because he feared God more than most people do. Not because he was the most qualified administrator or the most politically connected. The fear of God was the decisive qualification. In your own appointments and in your own seeking of appointment, how central is the fear of God?

Prayer

Lord God, give your community leaders who fear you more than most people do. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Securing the City
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.

Then I put my brother Hanani in charge of Jerusalem, along with Hananiah the commander of the fortress, because he was a faithful man who feared God more than most. And I told them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot. While the guards are on duty, keep the doors shut and securely fastened. And appoint the residents of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their own homes.”
The List of Returning Exiles
(Ezra 2:1-67)

Now the city was large and spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet been rebuilt. Then my God put it into my heart to assemble the nobles, the officials, and the people to be enrolled by genealogy. I found the genealogical register of those who had first returned, and I found the following written in it:

These are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town, accompanied by Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah.* 7:7 Parallel text at Ezra 2:2 accompanied by Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah
