“You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD's hand.” (Isaiah 62:2-3)
For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, for Jerusalem's sake I will not remain quiet, till her vindication shines out like the dawn, her salvation like a blazing torch. The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory. You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow. You will be a crown of splendor in the LORD's hand, a royal diadem in the hand of your God. No longer will they call you Deserted, or name your land Desolate. But you will be called Hephzibah, my delight is in her, and your land Beulah, married; for the LORD will take delight in you.
The Catechism identifies the new name given by God as the sign of the covenant transformation: the person or community that receives a new name from God has received a new identity (CCC 203).
Brothers and sisters, no longer called Deserted or Desolate, called Hephzibah, my delight is in her. The name change is the covenant change. The identity of abandonment is replaced by the identity of delight. You who have been called by your failures, your losses, your past, God gives you a new name. His delight is in you.
Lord God, give us the new name from your mouth. Call us your delight. Replace every name of desolation with the name of your covenant love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
