“The LORD Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth.” (Isaiah 23:9)
Tyre, the great trading city, will be brought to ruin. Wail, ships of Tarshish. The merchants of Sidon will be struck speechless. Be ashamed, Sidon, for the sea has spoken. The LORD Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth. After seventy years the LORD will deal with Tyre; she will return to her hire. But in the end her profit and her earnings will be set apart for the LORD and not be stored or hoarded.
The Catechism identifies the downfall of Tyre as the type of every pride organised around commercial and material power rather than the fear of God (CCC 2113).
Brothers and sisters, the LORD planned to bring down her pride in all her splendor. Tyre's splendor was real, the merchant queen of the ancient world. But splendor organised around its own greatness rather than around the LORD draws the specific attention of the God who humbles all who are renowned on the earth. Build splendor for him, not for yourself.
Lord God, you planned the humbling of Tyre's splendor. Humble every splendor built for its own glory. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
