“But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always.” (Hosea 12:6)
Ephraim feeds on the wind; he pursues the east wind all day and multiplies lies and violence. He makes a treaty with Assyria and sends olive oil to Egypt. The LORD has a charge to bring against Judah; he will punish Jacob according to his ways and repay him according to his deeds. In the womb he grasped his brother's heel; as a man he struggled with God. He struggled with the angel and overcame him; he wept and begged for his favour. He found him at Bethel and talked with him there. But you must return to your God; maintain love and justice, and wait for your God always. The merchant uses dishonest scales and loves to defraud. But I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt.
The Catechism identifies the injunction to maintain love and justice as the covenant summary: the two virtues that together constitute the shape of faithful covenant life (CCC 1807).
Brothers and sisters, maintain love and justice and wait for your God always. Three obligations: maintain love; maintain justice; wait. The waiting is as much a command as the love and justice. The person who loves and does justice but cannot wait is the person who replaces God's timing with their own. Wait for your God always. He comes at the right time.
Lord God, let us maintain love and justice and wait for you always. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
