"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." (Galatians 5:22-23)
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Paul is direct: if the Galatians allow themselves to be circumcised as a religious requirement, Christ will be of no value to them. They would be obligating themselves to obey the whole Law, and they would have fallen away from grace. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value; the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. The freedom of the Gospel is not licence; it is the freedom to love. The Law could command love but could not produce it. The Spirit of Christ, poured into the heart, produces from within what the Law could only demand from without.
Paul warns that freedom must not be used as an opportunity for the flesh. The works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, debauchery, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, orgies. Those who live like this will not inherit the Kingdom of God. The contrast is the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. The Catechism calls these the fruits of the Holy Spirit, perfections that the Spirit forms in the believer as the first fruits of eternal glory, signs that the Christian is living according to the Spirit (CCC 1832).
Brothers and sisters, notice that the works of the flesh are plural and the fruit of the Spirit is singular. The flesh scatters into many disordered things; the Spirit produces one integrated life. And the fruit is produced, not manufactured. You do not make fruit by effort; you remain in the vine and the fruit comes. Remain in Christ through prayer, sacrament, and love, and the nine qualities of the Spirit's fruit will come. Strive to produce them in your own strength and you will exhaust yourself.
Holy Spirit, produce your fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. We cannot manufacture these. We can only remain in the vine. Keep us there. Against such things there is no law. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
