“Because Ammon said 'Aha!' over my sanctuary when it was desecrated and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste... therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East as a possession.” (Ezekiel 25:3,4)
Ezekiel 25-32 contains oracles against surrounding nations: Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia, Tyre, Sidon, and Egypt. The common thread is that these nations took pleasure in Jerusalem's fall or took advantage of Israel's weakness. Against Ammon: because Ammon said 'Aha!' over my sanctuary when it was desecrated and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste and over the people of Judah when they went into exile, therefore I am going to give you to the people of the East as a possession. Against Moab: because Moab said Judah has become like all the other nations, I will expose the flank of Moab. Against Edom: because Edom took revenge on Judah, I will lay my vengeance on Edom through my people Israel. Against the Philistines: because they acted in vengeance with malice in their hearts.
The Catechism draws from the oracles against the nations the principle of universal accountability: the God of Israel is the God of all nations who holds every people responsible for their treatment of the vulnerable (CCC 56).
Brothers and sisters, they said Aha! when God's sanctuary was desecrated. The gloating over another community's destruction is one of the most condemned attitudes in the prophetic literature. God notices who gloats when the sacred is profaned and who mourns. Let your response to the suffering of others determine which list your name appears on.
Lord God, keep us from saying Aha! when others suffer. Give us the mourning of those who feel the pain of every community's loss. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
