"Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle." (Exodus 40:34)
God tells Moses the exact day on which to erect the tabernacle: the first day of the first month of the second year. Moses does everything the LORD commands: he erects the tabernacle, puts the Ark inside, sets up the table, arranges the bread, brings in the lampstand, places the gold altar of incense, hangs the curtain at the entrance, sets up the altar of burnt offering, puts the basin between the tent and the altar, erects the courtyard, hangs the entrance curtain. Then he anoints every piece with oil, consecrating it for the LORD. He washes Aaron and his sons and clothes them and anoints them as the LORD commanded.
Then: Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. The Exodus that began with the burning bush, the cloud that led through the wilderness day and night, the glory that Moses could not see directly but experienced as the afterglow: now the glory fills the place that has been built for it. The Catechism identifies this filling of the tabernacle as the type of the Incarnation, the Pentecost, and the eschatological filling of the new creation: everywhere God's dwelling is established with his people, his glory fills it (CCC 2580). Exodus ends not with a commandment but with a presence.
Brothers and sisters, the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. This is the goal of every act of faithful obedience, every carefully executed instruction, every costly gift offered: that the presence of God would fill what has been built for him. Build well. Give generously. Obey completely. And then wait for the cloud to come down and the glory to fill it.
Lord God, your glory filled the tabernacle that your people built in obedience to your commands. Fill every space we prepare for you: our churches, our homes, our hearts. Let your glory settle where faithful obedience has built a dwelling worthy of your presence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
