"Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might." (Ecclesiastes 9:10)
The Teacher observes that the same destiny overtakes all - the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the clean and the unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. This is the evil in everything that happens under the sun: the same destiny overtakes all. The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward. Go, eat your food with gladness and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
The Catechism identifies the counsel to do with all your might whatever the hand finds as the wisdom of present engagement: the life given by God is to be lived fully, not held in reserve (CCC 1007).
Brothers and sisters, whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. The half-hearted effort, the withheld energy, the task approached with one foot out the door: Ecclesiastes condemns all of these. You have this life, this day, this task. Do it with all your might. There will be no second attempt in the realm of the dead.
Lord God, whatever our hands find to do today, let us do it with all our might. Give us the full engagement with this life that you designed it to receive. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
