"There need be no poor people among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you." (Deuteronomy 15:4)
Every seventh year, every creditor must cancel the debt owed to them by a fellow Israelite. God will so bless them that there need be no poor people among them. But then, aware of human nature, the law addresses the temptation that arises: do not harbour a wicked thought such as: the seventh year, the year for cancelling debts, is near, so that you show ill will toward the needy among you and give them nothing. If you refuse, the poor person will cry to the LORD against you. Give generously and without resentment. The LORD will bless you for it in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.
There need be no poor people among you, for in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will richly bless you. Jesus will echo this passage in John 12:8: the poor you will always have with you, a quotation of Deuteronomy 15:11, which follows directly: there will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy. The Catechism draws from the sabbatical year the principle of the social mortgage on all property: no personal wealth is absolute, and the covenant community has obligations to its most vulnerable members built into its very economic structure (CCC 2449).
Brothers and sisters, give generously and without resentment. The resentful gift, the charity given while thinking about the seventh year approaching, is specifically named and forbidden. The heart that gives is as important as the hand that gives. Ask God to give you not only the open hand but the open heart that delights in giving rather than calculating what it will cost.
Lord God, you commanded the cancellation of debts every seventh year so that there need be no poor among your people. Give us open hands and open hearts toward all who are poor in our communities. And remind us that all we have comes from your blessing. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
