“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.” (Daniel 12:3)
Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people, everyone whose name is found written in the book, will be delivered. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever. Daniel is told to close up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end. The man clothed in linen swears by the one who lives forever: it will be for a time, times and half a time. Daniel asks: what will the outcome of all this be? He is told: go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end. You will rest, and then at the end of the days you will rise to receive your allotted inheritance.
The Catechism identifies Daniel 12:2-3 as the clearest affirmation of the resurrection of the dead in the Old Testament: the dead will awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting contempt (CCC 992).
Brothers and sisters, those who lead many to righteousness will shine like the stars for ever and ever. The ministry that brings others to righteousness has a permanent starlike glory. Whatever is done to lead a single person toward God is written in the stars. It will shine in the new creation. Lead many to righteousness. The stars are being lit by the names of those you bring.
Lord God, let us shine like the brightness of the heavens and lead many to righteousness like the stars for ever and ever. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
