Catholic Commentary on 2 Thessalonians 3

"Never tire of doing what is good." (2 Thessalonians 3:13)

Prayer and Warning

Paul asks for the Thessalonians' prayers that the word of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honoured, and that they may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful and will strengthen and protect them from the evil one. He has confidence in the Lord that they are doing and will continue to do the things he commands. He prays that God may direct their hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance.

Against Idleness

Paul gives a firm warning against those who are idle and disruptive. He had modelled the opposite when among them: he had worked night and day, labouring and toiling, not eating anyone's food without paying for it, so as not to be a burden, and to make himself a model for them to follow. His rule: if anyone will not work, neither shall they eat. He hears that some among them are idle and disruptive, not busy workers but busybodies. Such people he commands to settle down and earn the food they eat. As for the Thessalonians themselves: Never tire of doing what is good.

The Catechism draws from this passage and from the creation narrative the dignity of human work as participation in God's own creative action, and the obligation that work places on every capable person (CCC 2427). Idleness that exploits the generosity of the community is a violation of both justice and love. The person who works earns their bread; the person who works well contributes to the community's flourishing.

Paul closes in his own hand, a mark of authenticity in every letter: the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Living the Word

Brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good. Not doing what is spectacular, not doing what is recognised, not doing what produces visible results. Doing what is good. The small, unrewarded, consistent acts of goodness that no one notices are the ones this verse commends. Do not tire of them. The bread Paul refers to is not only physical. It is the daily sustenance of a life that contributes rather than merely consumes.

Prayer

Lord God, direct our hearts into your love and Christ's perseverance. Let us never tire of doing what is good. May the word of the Lord spread rapidly and be honoured. And the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Request for Prayer
Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may spread quickly and be held in honor, just as it was with you. And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not everyone holds to the faith. But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.* 3:3 Or from evil And we have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do what we command. May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.
A Warning against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from any brother who leads an undisciplined life that is not in keeping with the tradition you received 3:6 Or they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not undisciplined among you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. Instead, in labor and toil, we worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you. Not that we lack this right, but we wanted to offer ourselves as an example for you to imitate. 10 For even while we were with you, we gave you this command: “If anyone is unwilling to work, he shall not eat.”

11 Yet we hear that some of you are leading undisciplined lives and accomplishing nothing but being busybodies. 12 We command and urge such people by our Lord Jesus Christ to begin working quietly to earn their own living. 13 But as for you, brothers, do not grow weary in well-doing.

14 Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions we have given in this letter. Do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed. 15 Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
