"Now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord." (1 Thessalonians 3:8)
When Paul could stand it no longer, he sent Timothy from Athens to the Thessalonians to strengthen and encourage them in their faith, so that no one would be unsettled by the trials they were enduring. He had told them when he was with them that they would face trials, and so it proved. Now Timothy has returned with good news about their faith and love, and that they always have pleasant memories of Paul and long to see him, just as he longs to see them. This report brings Paul enormous relief: Now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. The pastor's vitality is bound up with the community's faithfulness. Paul does not use this merely as a rhetorical device; he means it literally. The spiritual health of those he has brought to faith is the measure of his own joy in ministry.
He prays night and day most earnestly to see them again and supply what is lacking in their faith. His prayer is that the Lord may increase and overflow their love for one another and for everyone, just as Paul's love overflows for them, so that they may be strengthened in holiness to be blameless before the Father at the coming of the Lord Jesus with all his holy ones. The eschatological horizon, the coming of Jesus, shapes the whole moral programme of the letter: holiness is preparation for that encounter. The Catechism presents this orientation toward the Parousia as the proper horizon of all Christian ethical life: we live in the light of the Lord's coming (CCC 1048).
Brothers and sisters, now we really live, since you are standing firm. The Christian life is not lived in isolation. The standing firm of those we love and serve is part of our own life. This is why the community matters so profoundly: your perseverance is a gift to every person who prayed for you, who taught you, who gave up sleep for you. Stand firm today, not only for yourself but for the pastor or friend or parent whose life is bound up with yours.
Lord Jesus, increase and overflow our love for one another and for everyone, just as Paul's love overflowed for those he served. Strengthen us in holiness so that we may be blameless before the Father at your coming. And let those who stand firm be a source of life to all who love them. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
