"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9)
As newborn babies crave pure spiritual milk, so believers are to crave the pure milk of the word, so that they may grow up in their salvation. They are coming to the living Stone, rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious. As living stones, they are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. The cornerstone is laid in Zion, chosen and precious, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame. To those who believe he is precious, but to those who do not believe, the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone, and a stone that causes people to stumble.
Then comes one of the most glorious descriptions of the Church in the entire New Testament: But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. The Catechism calls this the most complete Old Testament description of the People of God now fulfilled in the Church: election, priesthood, holiness, and possession, all given not for the community's own benefit but for the mission of praise and proclamation (CCC 1268).
As foreigners and exiles, they are to abstain from sinful desires and live good lives among the pagans so that their good deeds may silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. Submit to every human authority for the Lord's sake. For it is God's will that by doing good they should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people. They are free, but do not use freedom as a cover-up for evil. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honour the emperor.
Brothers and sisters, you are a royal priesthood. Not the ordained alone but every baptised person shares in the priesthood of Christ, the baptismal priesthood that offers spiritual sacrifices of prayer, work, and daily life. The ordained priesthood serves and enables this common priesthood. Both are real. Ask yourself today: what spiritual sacrifice am I offering? What praise am I declaring to the one who called me out of darkness?
Lord God, you called us out of darkness into your wonderful light. We are your chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, your special possession. Let our lives declare your praises. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
