"He will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever." (1 Chronicles 22:10)
David declares: the house of the LORD God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel. He begins gathering materials in great quantities: iron for nails and clamps, bronze, cedar logs, gold, silver. He tells Solomon: I had it in my heart to build a house for the name of the LORD my God. But the word of the LORD came to me: you have shed much blood; you are a warrior and have fought many wars. He will build a house for my Name. He will be my son, and I will be his father. And I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. David exhorts Solomon: be strong and courageous and do the work; do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God is with you. He charges the leaders of Israel to help Solomon build the sanctuary of the LORD God.
The Catechism identifies David's provision for a Temple he will not build as the model of the faithful steward who prepares what is needed for the next generation's work without insisting on completing the project himself (CCC 1350).
Brothers and sisters, David gathered the iron and bronze and cedar and gold for a Temple he would never build. The most faithful preparation is sometimes for the project that will be completed by your children. Gather what the next generation will need. Let them build what you gathered for. That is enough.
Lord God, give us the generous spirit of David who gathered for a Temple he would never see completed. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
